Obituary for Mary Catherine "Kate" Marlin (Crume)

Mary Catherine “Kate” Marlin, 94, of Rensselaer, passed away Tuesday morning, April 18, 2017 at the Rensselaer Care Center. She was born in Kokomo, Indiana on September 30, 1922, the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Louvina (Hawn) Crume. She graduated from Tipton High School with the Class of 1940. On July 1, 1942, in Hattiesburg, MS she married Henry Russell Marlin. He preceded her in death on October 24, 1994.

Kate and Henry owned and operated Kate & Hank’s Coffee Cup on Washington Street in downtown Rensselaer for 15 years. She also was the head cook at Rensselaer Elementary School and had worked at Northway Products and Schumacher Electric Corp. She was a longtime member of Bethany Evangelical Free Church. At the church she was involved in the Women’s Missionary Group, Ladies Dartball League, and AWANA Club. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her delicious dinner rolls. She enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family.

Kate is survived by her loving family: three sons: Henry Russell Marlin, Jr. (wife: Rita) of Fort Worth, TX, Ronald Eugene Marlin of Rensselaer, and Bradley Joseph Marlin (wife: Joy) of Rossville; one sister, Maxine Crail of Austin, TX; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband Henry; two sons, Steven and William; one grandson, Steven Marlin, Jr.; one great-grandson, Keagen Josiah Marlin; two brothers, Jim and Joe; and three sisters: Margaret, Gertrude, and Nancy.

Visitation will be Friday, April 21, 2017 from 1 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m. (CDT) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Pastor Tim Hendrix officiating.
