Obituary for David Allen Bassett

David Allen  Bassett
David Allen Bassett passed away at 7 p.m. on September 26, 2016 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis, due to complications from surgery on September 16th.

Mr. Bassett was born on March 29, 1941 in Gary, Indiana to Charles and Dorothy Bassett. He was a member of the U.S. Navy, stationed on the U.S.S. Pocono from 1959-1963. He married Susan on August 17, 1963, and they remained lifelong friends after their divorce, enjoying their grandchildren. David attended Purdue University, taking classes in mathematics and science. He worked as an iron worker, auto mechanic, retail manager, handyman, and in landscaping/lawn care. He cared for his mother until her death in 2002.

David was preceded in death by: his parents; his brother, Wayne Bassett; two infant sons; and his cousins.

He is survived by: his daughter, Debbie (Bassett) VanderMel; his granddaughters, Hannah and Lilly and their father Jeff VanderMel, all of Odon, Indiana; sister-in-law Peggy Bassett of Atlanta, Georgia; nephew Charles (Tori) Bassett and niece Megan Bassett; and cousins Denny Brown of Roswell, Georgia and Kay (Brown) Madison of Brook, Indiana.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. (EDT) at the Odon Christian Church, 208 S. Spring St., Odon, IN 47562. Graveside services with military honors will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 1 p.m. (CDT) at Oakland Cemetery in Morocco, Indiana.
