Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Kessler (Hagen)

Elizabeth "Betty"  Kessler (Hagen)
Elizabeth “Betty” Kessler, 99, a lifetime resident of Morocco, passed away Monday, July 11, 2016 at Westside Garden Plaza Assisted Living in Indianapolis. She was born in Morocco on June 18, 1917, daughter of the late Ross and Bessie (Clark) Hagen. On August 14, 1941, in Morocco, she married Howard E. Kessler.

She graduated from Morocco High School and Indiana State Teachers College where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education. She received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from Butler University in 2014. She was a School Teacher at Morocco Elementary School for 35 years. She also owned and operated The Lunch Box Restaurant and the Morocco Tea Room and Art Center. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Morocco, United Methodist Women, the Newton County Historical Society, Projects Club, Garden Club, and the Morocco American Legion. She was the recipient of the Lafayette Journal & Courier’s George Award in 1986. Her passions were keeping Morocco beautiful, gardening, painting, and writing poetry.

Betty is survived by her loving family: children: Earl Ross Kessler (wife: Mary) of Muskego, Wisconsin, Vicki Lynn Hershman (husband: Walt Daigle) of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Wesley David Kessler (wife: Sara) of Brook, Indiana; 15 grandchildren: Kimberly Langeberg (husband: John) of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Brian Kessler (wife: Sara) of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Julie Lau (husband: Chris) of West Allis, Wisconsin, Chris Kessler of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Micha Hershman of San Francisco, California, Elizabeth “Betsy” Hershman-Greven (wife: Rachael) of Seattle, Washington, Heather Daigle (husband: Abdechafi Boubkir) of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Walter T. “Tom” Daigle III (wife: Kimberly) of Montgomery, Illinois, Patrick Daigle (wife: Chalen) of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Jeff Kessler of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Ryan Kessler (wife: Kindra) of Rensselaer, Indiana, Ian King of Brook, Indiana, Kristen Whaley (husband: Pat), Chloe and Katlyn Whaley, all of Kentland, Indiana; 22 great-grandchildren: Lauren and Molly Langeberg of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Emma and Lily Kessler of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Evan and Conner Jacob Lau of West Allis, Wisconsin, Naomi and Cora Hershman-Greven of Seattle, Washington, Zain and Aymon Boubkir of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Walter T. “Tommy” Daigle IV of Montgomery, Illinois, Jake, Alex, and Mason Daigle of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Adam Scott Kessler of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Nevaeh and Carter Ogborn and Gavin Kessler of Rensselaer, Indiana, Kelsie Willey, Logan Shanley, and Mya Whaley, all of Kentland, Indiana, and Camryn King of Brook, Indiana; and one brother, Bernard “Rex” Hagen of Anna Maria Island, Florida.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Ross and Bessie Hagen; husband Howard E. Kessler; two brothers, Johnny Hagen and Vic Hagen; and one sister, Gracie Rice.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. (CDT) at the First United Methodist Church of Morocco. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Morocco with Rev. Wayne Williams officiating. A funeral dinner will be held in the church fellowship hall following the funeral. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 10 a.m. Betty’s wishes were to help the Town of Morocco any way you can. Memorials are suggested to the Betty Kessler Park Fund. Make checks payable to the Town of Morocco. On the memo line indicate “Betty Kessler Park Fund”.
