Obituary for Gloria Georgia Lewis (Vass)

Gloria Georgia Lewis (Vass)
Gloria (Georgia) Lewis, 81, of Remington, passed away August 26, 2015 at Green Hill Manor Nursing Home in Fowler. She passed away on what would have been her and her husband’s 65th wedding anniversary. She was born in the Laurel Fork community near Hillsville, Virginia on December 23, 1933 to the late Vernon and Hattie Ola (Nester) Vass. She was the fourth of five children.

On August 26, 1950, Georgia married Avery Lewis who preceded her in death on June 4, 2013. Georgia is survived by her daughter, Ruena (Kenneth) Rogers of Remington; three grandchildren: Nathan (Valeri) Rogers of Remington, Nancy (Bryan) Adwell of Fowler and Millie (Allan) Maximo of San Pedro Sula, Honduras; and seven grandchildren: Ali, Sadi, Averi and James Rogers and Lucia, Hannah and Sarah Maximo. Georgia is also survived by: a brother, Bradford (Nell) Vass of St. Albans, West Virginia; and two sisters-in-law, Estes Leftridge and Bonnie Vass, both of Hillsville, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband Avery Lewis; one brother, Posie (Bonnie) Vass; and two sisters, Idesta (Darnell) Tolbert and Helen (Wilford) Horton.

Avery and Georgia moved from Virginia to Indiana in 1964 to help with farming for his brother-in-law, Rush (Azalee) Dalton. They lived in Goodland, Rensselaer and Remington. In November of 2012, due to health issues, Avery and Georgia moved to the country near Remington to live with their daughter. Georgia later resided in the Green Hill Nursing Home in Fowler.

Georgia loved to cook, garden and can vegetables and keep a very clean house. She also kept house for several older couples in the Rensselaer area. Until health issues kept her homebound, she was an active member of the Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

Visitation will be on Saturday, August 29, 2015 from 10 a.m. until noon (Central Time) at the Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at the church at noon with Elder Thurman Ritchie officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer is handling the arrangements.
