Obituary for Mary Margaret Reed (Sayers)

Mary Margaret Reed, 83, of Lafayette passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015 at her home. She was born on April 15, 1932 at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer to the late Ernest V. and Helen Margaret (Dunlap) Sayers.

On November 20, 1960 she was married to Paul G. Reed at the Church of the Nazarene in Rensselaer and was employed for many years in the office of the Rensselaer Republican. In 1992 she and her husband moved to Indianapolis where she retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs following twenty years of service. In 2001 they moved to Monticello and in 2008 they moved to Lafayette.

In the early years of their marriage they enjoyed camping with family members followed by traveling for many years visiting all of the United States, most of the Provinces in Canada as well as England, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong and China.

In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by two brothers, John Sayers of Rensselaer and Charles Sayers (wife Ellen) of DeMotte; and a sister, Judith Ann (husband Kinnie) Messer of Crossville, Tennessee; two brother-in-laws, Raymond E. (wife Maria) Reed of Indianapolis and John Stout of Wabash; two sister-in-laws, Karen Sayers of Champaign, Illinois and Rosemarie Reed of Columbia City, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by five sisters: Alice Strain, Betty Huhn, Helen Lester, Rita Frome and Janet Sue Stout; and four brothers: Ernest, Max, James, and Tom Sayers.

A Memorial Service will be held at Steinke Funeral Home, 403 N. Front St., Rensselaer on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 11 a.m. (Rensselaer Time) with Rev. Lisa Ulrich officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9 – 11 a.m. (Rensselaer Time). Per Mary’s wishes she will be cremated and inurnment will be at Memory Gardens, two miles west of Rensselaer on St. Rd. 114. Immediately following the service a luncheon will be served in the Church of the Nazarene Fellowship Hall, 210 S. McKinley Ave., Rensselaer, IN 47978.
