Phyllis JoAnn Chicke, 78, of Remington, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015 at the Rensselaer Care Center. She was born in Rensselaer, Indiana on Mar. 24, 1936, the daughter of the late Carl Louis Reuben Steinke and Virginia Mae (Day) Steinke.

Phyllis graduated from Rensselaer High School and spent most of her life living in the Monticello, Indiana area. She was a beautician and operated her own beauty shop for a number of years. She was also the church secretary at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Monticello. Phyllis was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Goodland, LWML, Thrivent, and The Red Hat Society. She loved gardening and grew beautiful flowers. She was also an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing, playing cards and traveling.

Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, Vic Chicke of Remington, Indiana; two daughters, Marlene Diane “Sunny” Shreve of Clayton, Oklahoma and Sharon Raye Gerlach (Chuck) of Idaville, Indiana; one son, Kevin Earl Lawson of Nashville, Michigan; seven grandchildren: Angelica Marie Govaert of Las Vegas, Nevada, Amanda Govaert of South Bend, Indiana, Christopher Springer and David Springer (Amanda), both of Idaville, Indiana, Geoffrey Smith of Ft. Hood, Texas, and Sophie and Samantha Lawson of Nashville, Michigan; two great grandchildren: Skyler and Sierra; and one brother, Larry Steinke (Suzanne) of Rensselaer, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Reuben and Virginia Steinke; one sister, Deanna Steinke; and one brother, Edward Steinke.

Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015 from 2-7 p.m. (Central Standard Time) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. (Central Standard Time) at Trinity Lutheran Church of Goodland with Pastor David Mueller officiating.
