Thelma J. “Jeannie” Tanner, 79, of Rensselaer, passed away Thursday morning, January 16, 2014, at the Rensselaer Care Center. She was born in Gary on August 20, 1934, daughter of the late Robert Beck and Francis (Wallace) Beck. She was a graduate of Bishop Noll High School in Hammond. On May 5, 1962, in Gary, she married James E. Tanner. He preceded her in death May 20, 1996.
Thelma had been a resident of Rensselaer since 2007, having previously lived in Lake County. She was a homemaker and at one time had worked as a payroll clerk for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company in Gary. She was of the Lutheran faith and she enjoyed gardening.
Thelma is survived by: one son, Joseph Tanner (wife: Susan) of Houston, TX, and one daughter, Judy Roe of Hebron. Four grandchildren and one great grandson also survive. She was preceded in death by: her parents and her husband.
Cremation was chosen and interment will take place at a later date at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Schererville. A memorial luncheon will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at The Patio Restaurant, located at 7706 Broadway in Merrillville. Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer is assisting the family.
