After retiring from farming, Avery worked for the Jasper County Highway Department for 10 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting arrowheads and other Indian artifacts, and had a sizable collection. He also enjoyed planting and working a large garden. He attended the Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church until his health kept him homebound.
