John Ray Northern, 59, of Remington, passed away Sunday evening, October 14, 2012 at the Rensselaer Care Center. John was born in Rensselaer on April 3, 1953, son of Helen M. (Tatlock) and the late Dayton R. Northern. He served his Country in the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey from 1971-72, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal. John worked as a self-employed truck driver for 25 years, retiring in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion and AmVets and he enjoyed playing billiards.

John is survived by long-time companion Nellie A. Northern of Remington; a daughter, Misty M. Hammond of Remington; two sons, Johnny R. Northern of Remington and Jimmy Adams of Illinois; a step-son, Tim Sanders of Remington; a brother, Jeff L. Northern of Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren: MaKayla, Devin, Kelcie, Austin, and Shaylyn Northern; and a step-granddaughter, Bailie Sanders. He was preceded in death by his father, Dayton R. Northern, and his sister, Debra Ann Garred.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer is handling the arrangements.
